West Virginia business owner wins Small Business Person of the Year Award

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) -- A Hurricane business owner is taking home a big prize in our nation’s capital.

Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon honored Douglas Tate of Alpha Technologies, Inc. with two awards Monday --
Small Business Person of the Year for West Virginia and first runner up for National Small Business Person of the Year.

Tate founded Alpha Technologies — a business technology and IT company — in 2001. He now has 76 employees and 3,600 clients worldwide.

“I believe it’s all about trial and error. Take few steps, get knocked back a few times, and just keep learning, hiring the right people, and surrounding yourself with people smarter than me," said Tate.

“Small businesses are the glue, and they’re the activators in their communities. So when they come back from Washington having had this experience and being a winner, to bring that enthusiasm back into their community," said McMahon.

Small business owners from each state, Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C. were honored at the ceremony Monday. It’s all part of National Small Business Week, which runs through May 5th. Click "Related Links" for more information.
