WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - From the Kansas Fourth District to the nation’s top diplomat. If confirmed by the Senate, Mike Pompeo will become the next Secretary of State. President Donald Trump announcing Tuesday that current Secretary Rex Tillerson is out and he wants Pompeo in. Members of the Kansas delegation say it’s a big day for the Sunflower State.
Rep. Roger Marshall (R-KS) says Pompeo will be strong on national security as head of the Department of State.
“It’s a great opportunity for him and for all of Kansas,” said Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS).
Estes took over Pompeo’s Kansas fourth congressional district in 2017. He says there’s no better choice.
“It’s great having another Kansan in a leadership role here helping improve the country and helping make it safer for all of us,” said Estes.
Estes says Kansans should be proud to have a leader looking out for Kansas values on the world stage. Rep. Roger Marshall (R-KS) says Pompeo is a good choice at this critical moment for international affairs.
“As Secretary of State I think he’s always going to look for United States national security first and I think that’s a great place to be in,” said Marshall.
The move sent shockwaves through the Senate. Some Republican senators aren’t thrilled to see Tillerson shown the door.
“Rex Tillerson is a great American and I’m sorry to see him go,” said Senator John Cornyn (R-TX).
Cornyn, the second-ranking Senate Republican, says this move adds more to the already-full Senate plate. They will have to go through the confirmation process for Pompeo and his nominated replacement, CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel. Democrats are sounding off against these nominations. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) says she is shocked and sees signs of instability.
“I just think that this administration is falling apart,” said Harris.
The timeline for Pompeo’s confirmation process in the Senate is unknown at this time.
