It is just one part of a full weekend of memorial events for families and coworkers who lost firefighters in the line of duty.

“What am I missing? His smile, his laugh, his hugs," said Sonia Eischen, fallen firefighter Daniel Lucius' Godmother.

Lucius always wanted to be a firefighter.

“Boy, once he saw those fireman’s boots he wanted to be in them and from that point on that was his goal to be a firefighter," Eischen said.

Lucius died doing what he loved. He was responding to a call when his truck went off the road and crashed in the nearly frozen pond last November.

On Sunday, his mother, his godmother and aunt accepted a folded flag and rose in his memory at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

“Being part of a group, being a firefighter, helping people that pretty much described Dan—he was very social and just everybody was his friend," said Eischen.

Lucius is one of 119 firefighters honored at the national memorial. Thousands of people came out to honor the responders who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Although Lucius’ family continues to grieve, they are finding ways to celebrate his life throughout the community.

“Making charitable donations in his name, living the values that he always demonstrated," said Eischen.

With that call to service, Lucius’ family grew. The Carroll Township Volunteer Fire Department’s Chief John Brough said he may be gone, but never forgotten.

“There’s hardly a time at the station where his name is not mentioned at least once," said Brough.

Brough said Lucius inspired others with his passion and dedication for the job…and he continues to share those gifts today.

Chief Brough said the local Oak Harbor Apple Festival will celebrate Lucius’ life with a bell ringing at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
