Colorado's Sen. Gardner fights to address rising youth suicide rate

WASHINGTON (GrayDC) Colorado's Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), along with Alabama's Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) introduced a bill to increase resources to prevent youth suicide.

"This is a tragedy that we can address and we should address through legislation that I have introduced," said Gardner.

Gardner said suicide is the leading cause of death among children in Colorado. He said the legislation will build strategies in communities to prevent suicide and reduce the numbers.

"It is very tough. It affects every community and every neighborhood," he said.

The Senator said he is also working on legislation to help increase the number of mental health workers where there are shortages.
