Sen. Johnny Isakson gives farewell address
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - After decades of political service, Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) is resigning at the end of the year, citing health issues.
Tuesday, Isakson delivered his farewell address from the floor of the senate, preaching the importance of bipartisanship and collaboration.
“If you can’t pass a law, you can’t solve a problem,” said Isakson during his speech. “If you are one of those people that say 'my way or the highway', we have a problem.”
Isakson’s oldest son John, and grandson Jack flew in from Georgia to share the big moment celebrating his tenure with close friends and family.
“He’s definitely come along way and I can’t wait to see how he expands off his legacy going into retirement,” said Jack Isakson.
Isakson’s departure is causing a Senate seat shake-up in the south. Both of the Georgia’s Republican held seats will be up for grabs in 2020, as Sen. David Purdue (R-GA) is up for reelection.
While members of the Democratic National Committee hope to flip both seats, republican leaders say a democratic upset is a long shot.
Isakson’s family says they will be keeping an eye on the upcoming races, but for now they are focusing on his retirement.
