Conservative Rep. Clay Higgins bid for a third term reaches the finish line
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Among the many House races this Election Day, Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) is finishing his bid to keep a hold on his seat. Experts are not predicting an upset in this race, but Higgins does have challengers he needs to fend off.
Higgins is seeking reelection to a third term in the House of Representatives. He needs more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff, but that is something he easily achieved in his last reelection bid in a much more crowded field.
The third Congressional District in Louisiana votes heavily in favor of Republicans and Higgins has a very conservative record during his short time on Capitol Hill. He is a staunch ally of President Donald Trump who fared very well in Louisiana in 2016, and who experts predict will have a successful day in the state this year as well.
Robert Hogan, political expert from Louisiana State University said Higgins is likely to have an easy time in his reelection bids for the foreseeable future, unless a major controversy happens or he decides to step aside. He says Higgins fits the mold well in his district.
“His brand is one that is a renegade and is a fighter and as someone who does not play by traditional rules of politics,” said Hogan.
Polls close in Louisiana at 8pm.
