WASHINGTON (Gray DC) -- A young man from Toledo is earning special recognition tonight in Washington DC.
One of the six finalists of the Boys and Girls Club National Youth of the Year Award met today with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur.
“This is a great honor for me, just growing up, I’ve always been Toledo proud and to be able to represent my city on such a prestigious platform it is definitely a dream come true,” said Keyaunte Jones.
Jones says he feels proud to represent Toledo as the Midwest Youth of the Year for the Boys and Girls Club.
Tuesday Democratic Representative Marcy Kaptur recognized him and other members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo.
“Just so impressed with him with his positive attitude and his openness to his own life ahead and the good decisions he’s made,” said Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio.
Jones grew up in a single-parent household and says at a young age, he flourished in large part thanks to the great relationships he made at the Boys and Girls Club.
“The boys and girls club played a tremendous role in my formulation as a young adult. They definitely helped with my leadership abilities,” said Jones.
After benefiting from the program as a kid, Jones eventually became a staff member. He adds that faith and sports have kept him on the right track.
“Big dreams. I’m currently studying biology and I hope to go into sports medicine and then be an orthopedic surgeon, so that’s the goals for my future,” said Jones.
During Tuesday’s hour-long meeting with Kaptur, this group shared their hope to continue improving childhood nutrition and hunger within Ohio.
"I want to be an advocate for that and I am definitely willing to help my city," said Jones.
"To me, he’s a winner, not just for our region but for the country, we’re very proud of him," said Kaptur.
