Starr reacts to Kavanaugh nomination

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) -- "Absolute joy" is how former Whitewater independent counsel and Baylor University president Ken Starr says he felt when he learned President Donald Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Starr spoke to the Gray Television Washington News Bureau about how he recruited Kavanaugh to his law firm over 20 years ago.

"We won the ‘Brett Kavanaugh Derby,’ as we called it, because he was very heavily recruited," said Starr.

Starr says Kavanaugh has the merits to become the next Supreme Court justice.

"Even though all the people on [the president's] list were extremely good and extremely qualified, Brett’s just a little bit better in terms of his record. The record is just so extensive — 12 years on the bench, and the court which he serves on, the DC Circuit, is a very important court," said Starr.

Starr says Kavanaugh is in his thoughts and prayers as he meets with senators on Capitol Hill and prepares for his confirmation hearing.

"I think he’s going to do well," he said.
